Airbag light on
After accident.

Crash repaired but the light will not go out? That is usually locked crash data in the module, not a failed bag fit.

Why the airbag light stays on after a crash

When airbags or seatbelt pretensioners deploy, the airbag control module does more than fire the system. It records the crash event and often locks. That memory survives a body shop visit. New bags, new belts, and a tidy dash will not wipe it.

Until the ECU is cleared, the warning light stays on, SRS messages linger, and many cars fail an MOT on the restraint system. Owners and garages land on this page when the visible repair looks finished and the dash still says otherwise.

What usually causes the post-accident light

The common path is straightforward. Collision happens, bags or pretensioners fire, the module stores crash data. The repairer replaces the deployed parts. The light stays on because the control unit still thinks it is mid-event. A generic “clear codes” attempt at a general garage often fails for the same reason: the lock lives inside the module.

Less often, the module itself is damaged in the impact. Water, crush damage, or burn marks mean replace, not reset. Most units we see after a typical repair are intact and only need a crash data clear.

  • Airbags or pretensioners deployed and later replaced
  • SRS / restraint light still on after the body shop finished
  • Quoted a brand-new ECU when your own module looks undamaged
  • MOT fail on the airbag warning after an otherwise complete repair

How we help after the accident

A postal airbag module reset clears the stored crash data from the ECU you already own. Find the part number on the sticker (or WhatsApp a clear label photo), order the matching reset, and post only the module to Universal Square, Devonshire St N, Manchester M12 6JH. We clear it, test it, and send it back ready to fit.

No crash, but the light is still on? Start on our airbag warning light page instead. Need it back quickly? See same-day airbag reset.

Airbag light after accident FAQs

Why is the airbag light still on after an accident?

Deployed airbags or pretensioners leave crash data locked in the airbag control module. Fitting new bags or belts alone does not clear that lock. The light stays on until the module is reset or replaced.

The car was repaired. Why did the light come back or never go out?

Body shops often replace bags, belts, and trim first. The ECU still holds the crash event. Until that memory is cleared, the restraint system reports a fault even when the new hardware is fitted correctly.

Do I need a new airbag module after a crash?

Usually no. If the ECU itself is undamaged, a postal crash data clear resets your own unit so it can be fitted again. We do not sell modules. We reset the one you already have.

Will the car fail its MOT with the airbag light on?

Yes in most cases. An illuminated airbag or SRS warning is a restraint-system fail. Clearing the module after a proper repair is often the last step before a clean test.

How much does an airbag light reset after an accident cost?

Most airbag module resets are £35. Complex modules are £46. Motorhome B0100-49 is £65. Prices are all-in for the reset service. Return shipping is chosen at checkout.

How fast can you clear crash data after an accident?

For most modules, if we receive it in the morning, we complete the crash data reset and send it back the same day.

What should I send you?

Post only the airbag module / ECU with your order number inside the parcel. Keep brackets on the vehicle unless we ask for them. WhatsApp a clear photo of the label first if you are unsure of the part number.
