What “no communication” with the airbag module means
When a diagnostic tool reports airbag module no communication, it is telling you the scan session never got a clean reply from the SRS / restraint ECU. Garages also say no-comms, cannot communicate with SRS module, or lost communication with the airbag control unit. The dashboard airbag warning light usually stays on because the car will not trust a system it cannot talk to.
That message is a symptom, not a full diagnosis. Sometimes the ECU is locked after a crash, corrupted, or failed internally. Sometimes the wiring, fuse, power supply, or connector is the real problem and the module itself is fine. This guide helps you sort those paths before you spend on a dealer replacement.
Common causes of SRS no-comms
Work through the easy checks first. A postal reset only helps when the module itself is the fault. Many “cannot communicate” jobs never leave the car once power and wiring are sorted.

- Internal memory or processor faults after impact or surge
- Corrosion, burn marks, or water damage on the ECU board

When a postal reset or repair can help
If your garage has confirmed power and wiring to the ECU, and the part still will not talk, specialists can often recover it. How the postal process works for no-comms modules

What does airbag module no communication mean?
Your scan tool or dashboard reports that it cannot talk to the SRS / airbag ECU. Common wording includes no communication, no-comms, U-codes, or lost communication with the restraint module. The light stays on because the car cannot confirm the airbag system is healthy.
Can a postal reset fix no communication with the SRS module?
Sometimes yes. If the ECU is locked after a crash, corrupted internally, or holding a clearable fault that blocks live communication, a specialist reset or repair can restore it. Most resets are £35, complex £46, motorhome B0100-49 £65. If the hardware is dead, we say so rather than take the order.
Is no-comms always a bad airbag module?
No. Wiring breaks, a blown fuse, a poor connector, a flat battery during coding, or a wrong scan tool profile can all look like no communication. Rule those out first, or ask your garage to confirm the ECU itself is the fault before you post it.
Should I buy a used module if mine will not communicate?
Not as a first step. A used ECU can arrive with someone else’s crash data or still need coding. If your original module can be repaired or reset, that usually costs less and keeps the car’s matched unit.
